2017 Miegunyah Student Award
Congratulations to third year geography student Eva Whyte who has been awarded a 2017 Miegunyah Student Award by the Ian Potter Museum of Art.
The Award requires each successful student (6 in total, drawn from across the University) to undertake a research-based minor project on an aspect of The Russell and Mab Grimwade ‘Miegunyah’ Collection, held by the Ian Potter Museum of Art. The scheme gives students experience in working in an interdisciplinary context with a material and visual culture collection. Eva’s project blurb is detailed below:
Eva has had a long interest in plants and botanical illustration and would like to research the botanical illustrations in the Grimwade collection through various geographical lenses. I am curious about the ways in which plants were represented and studied during colonisation, what plants were represented and what were not, what values were attributed to these plants? Who were these botanists? How ‘objective’ were they? How much of ‘themselves’ informed their illustrations? How influential were these illustrators and their works? And how do these works tie in with Russell Grimwade’s scientific and business interests?
